Boycott The Lucy Exhibit
|
1. There are too many loopholes and cover up on around the Lucy Exhibition. The Houston Museum of Natural scenes has been stubborn not to divulge the specifics of the business deal as who gets how much.
According to the Ethiopian Art and Tourism Minster at the initial meeting in Addis the Ethiopian officials asked for 30 million dollars, but Mr. Gezahegn Kebede, who is an individual residing in Houston and works for the local Jewelry store as a salesman has his eyes on Lucy to make profit. He recently has become a man with a “Fur Coat”. Mr. Gezahegn with no appreciation and value for Art was the key person on that initial meeting. He furiously argues with the Ethiopian Officials to shake hand on the 5 million dollar offer. According to the Minster, he was actually drawing attention by attempting to walk out of the meeting. There is also a rumor that few current and x-Houston City Councilman are also benefiting from the Lucy exhibit. Mr. Gezahegn works for the Ethiopian government under the title of honorary counselor, there is a speculation about him trafficking money for high government officials including the Prime Minster. Make no mistakes that the current Ethiopian Government will do anything and pay anyone to destroy Ethiopian Nationalism. Lucy fit to that Paradigm of Ethiopian Nationalism and it’s not a surprise not to see the EPDRF leaders doing what they do best and trying to get rid of Lucy before she galvanize and draw more of Ethiopian and African Nationalism. Mr. Gezahegn has been used willingly as a lubricant while EPDRF molesting Ethiopia and Ethiopian nationalism. It would be naive to think otherwise. Anyways, I mention this to set the tone of my point as how things are started.
2. I saw records that were put together by Ethiopian Community Organization, of over 50 questions and concerns from the Houston and surrounding Ethiopians as well as friends of Ethiopia. Those questions and concerns were presented to the Houston Museum of Natural Science on a format for the museum to reply. The HMNS is showing neither good phase nor professionalism to reply for concerns and questions of Ethiopians as well as the scientific community.
3. Lucy is not just an old artifact, She revolutionized the thoughts of evolution, humanity, and she is a priceless symbol of Humanity in general. We the Ethiopians would have been the first to join and work with the HMNS to promote and share our rich and diverse culture to the American public. But the HMNS short sightedness and greed cut that to zilch. We are saddened and at the same time anguished by HMNS weak and selfish decision. However, despite our individual ego and interest, we have a moral and ethical obligation to stand up and voice when humanity is degraded and subjugated.
As an insult to the injury, The Houston Museum of Natural Science has already made an arrangement with the University of Texas to make a replica upon Lucy’s arrival. Unless there is some devious and corrupt intention, when you borrow item from your neighbors, you have no right to modify or to duplicate that item in any shape or form. But Why and who give such a mandate to the museum to make a replica? This fits to my thoughts of Lucy, Nationalism, and Prime Minster of Ethiopia (EPDRF) regime. 4. Will Lucy ever return back to her homeland? I have my doubts but ECOH ask the question that after six years and before Lucy returns back to Ethiopia would the Museum be willing to pay for the independent scientist to make sure and have a “Carbon study” on Lucy's remain? What will happen to the replica that is in plan to have been made at University of Texas?
5. Lucy needs an independent Legal representation through out her stay until she departs back to her homeland Ethiopia. Would the museum be willing to put enough fund aside for Ethiopian community and friend of Ethiopian to select lawyers and counselors for her?
These are some of the questions that ECOH presented to The Houston Museum of Natural Science. On the bases of these premises, I ask all Ethiopians to stand together and show our integrity and solidarity by boycotting the Lucy exhibit that is sponsored by The Houston Museum of Natural Science.

Re: Boycott The Lucy Exhibit
|
ECOH set up this forum for anyone or groups to voice their value and opinion. The objective of my writing never directed to Mr.Gezahegn Kebede. I was challenging Ethiopians, friends of Ethiopians to boycott the Lucy exhibition on the bases of your objective findings and facts. I strongly believe that if you trust your own thoughts and feelings about what is right and just, you would have understood my intention. I don’t have any personal vendetta with the name I mentioned, but I have no respect for his value. I wonder if I say down to Prime Minster of Ethiopia and his supporter! Would that makes you uncomfortable, upset, and/or do you think I cross the Dixie Line and must pay a penalty?
A person has the right to live his or her life as the way they see that fit to their needs, but no body has the right to dismantle you domain and deprive your basic human needs. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to say why the original Lucy has to travel over and across the ocean? If they bring the replica of Lucy for us to see, does that make any different in our observation? As an Ethiopian why would you fight and argue the officials in Ethiopia to accept five million dollar deal? Even if you were not pro Ethiopia, logic would dictate us to stand for the underdogs to be paid in billions? If I could, I would like to get into his skin and be a pain in his ass. But I don’t think like him and he doesn’t worth it, because his value is insignificant to me. Now! I am being personal? On the other hand, I expect you or anyone not to take my word as is without evaluating and validating the facts. Once you have done that, as a citizen of the human race and as an Ethiopian you are expected to draw your own conclusion to boycott the Lucy exhibition and to voice against the value of the Houston Museum of Natural Science and any of those stooges who rally for half pocket full of blood money.
You make simple yet good statement to use the forum or not. It’s a forum and I deeply appreciate the organization. It’s my understanding that when they make the forum to public access, it’s their intent for user like you and I to discuses and learn from the unknown and as a community to stand together on issues that matters to most of us and mainly on humanity and the welfare of our motherland. In the process if I squeeze a few facts about one of your friends at the same time, if I pressed one of your pressure point and making you tickled one way or another that is something you need to accept to live with or learn to appreciate and make it better and work for all.
My friend fear is not something you need to associate with, because it will hold you not to learn from the unknowns, which intern might mold you to be a natural hypocrite. Hierocracy is nothing but inerasable scare that constrain your concourse mind. When human right subjected for undue and unjust situation I expect you and I and the Ethiopian Community organization, Ethiopian Football federation, any political and none political community organization to sand together to voce for the voiceless.
I take it that you have some better idea beside ECOH forum page that a person with free spirited mind can go and entertain his or her thoughts, ideas, facts, even his speculation to increase awareness and share best practices. I wrote this reply because your reply seems cynical and sarcastic.

Re: Boycott The Lucy Exhibit
|
Do you know what one love is? Love is a relative term, it can only mean something when you give value to your critical thinking or conscious thoughts about it, and until then you are infatuating with the idea of love. If you are thinking to compare Lucy to the time where families, societies, regions, countries are forming, then you better look into yourself in the mirror and see where you are standing. Do you read to listen and learn from what you see and read? Maybe you need to close your eyes and imagine what 3.2 million years mean to you. Back in that time, Lucy and her kinds were walking on earth like you and I in the upright position, the fact that she is bipedal would change almost embraced the west and the Victorian writers. Lucy empowers and signifies not only Ethiopian Nationalism but also to African nationalism and beyond. If you are humble about facts, you could have seen the big picture than the dot on the page. The current Ethiopian leaders are nothing but stooges who can bend over backward to sale and destroy Ethiopian nationalism. I don’t think it ‘s speculative to think that the West probably would hope for Lucy to vanish in the air as dust. Certainly they do not wish to see the Victorian history being tarnished by the history of Abyssinian through Lucy. But Meles and his stooges will do the job for them. Ethiopians in Ethiopia were deprived not to see the original Lucy but why is that the Meles regime generously offers for the HMNS to take the Original Lucy and other countless Ethiopian Orthodox real and priceless artifact? I wonder why????
I would like to challenge you to call the Museum official who work on the Lucy issue and ask who initially brought the idea of bringing Lucy? It was your friend and some members of the Houston City Council who call the museum to make a deal. I want you to ask a follow up question as why you are (HMNS) bringing the original Lucy? Why can’t you bring the replica that is on the display in Addis? They will tell you that “the Ethiopian government offer us to take the original” If that is so, then are you one of those who thinks like Tamrat Linie, Meles, and the rest of the stooges, who measure the history Ethiopia according to their own age and runs mile to sale and destroy Ethiopia and Ethiopian nationalism? As I said if the Houston Museum of Natural science bring the Lucy replica that was on the display in Addis, Anyone who respect what one love mean to him would have work his ass off with the museum to make sure our history and the glory of Lucy to be known all over. According to the letter that was sent to the Houston Museum of Natural Science, Ethiopian community Organization (ECOH) has been working with the museum since 2004. I understand as why ECOH reject the idea of Lucy coming to the united state mainly for profit.
I hope you would agree that Ignorance is not an excuse to reflect your selfish ego and interest on the expense of the collectives (Majority). What you need to ask is what is the Ethiopian Art and tourism or the Ethiopian people will benefit from this exhibition? , On similar exhibition, for example the Egyptian make millions of dollar and Cairo University receive fund for research study. In principle, Ethiopia is less than any of those countries? Or is it a mindset that Ethiopia and Ethiopians doesn’t worth a shit? I understand Meles and his stooges are always look out for the opportunity to execute their long awaited plan to dismantle the country, disfranchise Ethiopians, and to undermined Ethiopian nationalism. Therefore, regardless of our selfish individual ego, we have a moral obligation to stand together and boycott the Houston Museum of Natural Science on the Lucy exhibition. . Finally, if you go after your little adventurer with the museum by denying the facts and deluding yourself from reality, you are a person who can condition himself to circumstance and accept the idea of whom ever sleep with my mother is my father. If that is the case, either you are way too librated and think in a dimensions or you are a true stooge who use all the excuse to full fill his own selfish personal ego on the expense of others.

TO ALL MY ETHIOPIAN BROTHERS & SISTERS,
AS WE ALL KNOW BY NOW LUCY WILL BE COMING TO THE HOUSTON MUSEUM ON SEPTEMBER OF 2007. IT SHOULD BE WITH THE GREATEST PRIDE WE AS THE HOUSTON COMMUNITY BE SO GRATEFUL TO BE HONORED TO HAVE THIS ONCE IN A LIFE TIME CHANCE TO SHOW THE WORLD OUR GREATEST HISTORY AND CULTURE ONCE AGAIN. IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOME PEOPLE IN THE ETHIOPIAN COMMUNITY DOESN'T GET THE PICTURE OR WANTS THE PIECE OF THE PIE FROM LUCY'S DEAL. THE SIGNING OF LUCY WILL BENEFIT FINANCIALLY THE MUSEUM IN ADDIS ABABA AND THE STUDY OF ARCHEOLOGY IN ETHIOPIA. INSTEAD OF GETTING PREPARED TO WELCOME LUCY IT IS A SHAME TO SEE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY OPPOSE IT. LUCY WILL BE BETTER PROTECTED AND CARED FOR IN THE US MUSEUM'S THAN SHE WAS IN HER OWN COUNTRY (SAD TO SAY BUT TRUE). LUCY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SKELETON IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND AND SHE WILL ALWAYS BE OURS NO MATTER WHERE SHE TRAVELS. AS I STATED LUCY WILL HELP FINANCE THE STUDY OF ARCHEOLOGY AND HELP MUSEUMS AROUND ETHIOPIA AND WILL ALSO BENEFIT PEOPLE & THERE FAMILIES THAT ARE WORKING IN THAT FIELD, WILL ALSO BE BETTER PROTECTED HERE SO WHY ARE SOME ETHIOPIANS OPPOSING ONE OF THE GREATEST SKELETON THAT CARIES OUR PRIDE IN HISTORY NOT TO LEAVE HER CLOSET? I BELIEVE IT IS SELFISHNESS, CARELESSNESS, GREEDINESS & I CAN GO ON SAYING MORE. MOST HAVEN'T EVEN SEEN WHERE LUCY HAS BEEN THERE LIFE TIME. FOR THOSE OF YOU THAT WANT TO HELP THE ETHIOPIAN PEOPLE STOP WAISTING ANY MORE TIME ON THE LUCY ISSUE AND DO SOMETHING TO CHANGE HISTORY BY HELPING OUR BROTHER & SISTERS IN ETHIOPIA IN DOING HUMANITARIAN WORK IN POVERTY, AIDS, MALARIA, HEPATITIS, CANCER & SO MANY OTHER DISEASES. OUR PEOPLE ARE WAITING FOR US.
SINCERELY, CONCERN ETHIOPIAN CITIZEN

What a nucklehead! It seems you are a kind of person who induce vomiting and keep regurgitating! I assure you that I am not going to waste my time with you. But I am going to help you to help yourself exposing what an idiot you are: First of all, you said that “AS WE ALL KNOW BY NOW LUCY WILL BE COMING TO THE HOUSTON MUSEUM ON SEPTEMBER OF 2007. IT SHOULD BE WITH THE GREATEST PRIDE WE AS THE HOUSTON COMMUNITY BE SO GRATEFUL TO BE HONORED TO HAVE THIS ONCE IN A LIFE TIME CHANCE TO SHOW THE WORLD OUR GREATEST HISTORY AND CULTURE ONCE AGAIN….”
What a pussy! Do you know who is coming? In what condition do you know that she is coming? I will not repeat myself, but despite how, why, what… If Lucy stays at her home in Ethiopia, She could generate if not ten times at list half that times of the revenue that you would think that she bring to Ethiopia. I wonder if you agree with that…however, do you know that HMNS is making a replica of Lucy at University of Texas? Do you understand the impact that has on Ethiopian Airlines, Ethiopian Hotel Industries, Ethiopian Transportation and Truism, Ethiopia and Ethiopians who are pushed around and ridiculed by your master will lose more than you and I can imagined. But I know a nucklehead like you would hope that to happen.
Do you have any clue what triggered and why Lucy is coming?
No! You went ahead keep regurgitating by saying that” IT IS UNFORTUNATE THAT SOME PEOPLE IN THE ETHIOPIAN COMMUNITY DOESN'T GET THE PICTURE OR WANTS THE PIECE OF THE PIE FROM LUCY'S DEAL. THE SIGNING OF LUCY WILL BENEFIT FINANCIALLY THE MUSEUM IN ADDIS ABABA AND THE STUDY OF ARCHEOLOGY IN ETHIOPIA. INSTEAD OF GETTING PREPARED TO WELCOME LUCY IT IS A SHAME TO SEE PEOPLE IN OUR COMMUNITY OPPOSE IT.”
You are a very twisted person; it will take 3.2 million years to untwist a person like you. Read it loud to yourself, I don’t think you can rationalized in a manner as human being but if you have someone who you trust, I suggest to let that person hear your as you read out loud and seek their opinion to understand and see how far out you are from the reality.
It’s let night and you are not only idiot but also somehow amusing and lunatic. You must have some sort of blood relationship with anyone of the stooges, because the statement you make below is atypical of your master alike. I want you to read it again: “LUCY WILL BE BETTER PROTECTED AND CARED FOR IN THE US MUSEUM'S THAN SHE WAS IN HER OWN COUNTRY (SAD TO SAY BUT TRUE). LUCY IS ONE OF THE GREATEST SKELETON IN THE HISTORY OF MANKIND AND SHE WILL ALWAYS BE OURS NO MATTER WHERE SHE TRAVELS.”
Personally, I will use as my tools to make a comparison point for others to make their own conclusion for boycotting the Lucy exhibition.

Re: Boycott The Lucy Exhibit

I'm an Anthropology graduate, currenlty working on a documentary film about Ethiopian Arts and photography. I left my native Ethiopia in 1997 for USA to reside in Huntsville. For me, one of the many advantages of living in USA has been to learn about what people know and don't know about Ethiopia . According to my experience, people are used to hearing problems about Ethiopia . And that is because of the way Ethiopia is portrayed in the western media. Many are led to believe that Ethiopia is nothing more than a deserted land somewhere in Africa where people starve and die. This indeed is the image many have of Ethiopia. As someone who was born and raised in Ethiopia , I know Ethiopia has many unique aspects that people anywhere in the world would like to know about. So in anticipation of the Ethiopian millennium, the Houston Museum and Ethiopian Tourism aspires to improve awareness about Ethiopia , its people, culture and history. In doing so, the Museum and Ethiopian Tourism wants to encourage people from all over Texas to get an opportunity to see the priceless Arts and history from the country starting September 2007. I highly recommed those who oppose the exhibition to do more research, if their intention are geniune. I recommend the following website for positive information http://www.artcons.udel.edu/news/2007/01/11/Cassman_Cared_for_Lucy_in_Ethiopia_

Re: Boycott The Lucy Exhibit

If I am not mistaken there is a similar project that was financed by Ethiopian Government and runs by Mr. Gezahegn Kebede as a point man. With his grossly wrong, exaggerated, and misleading interview with voice of America, Mr. Gezahegn himself has conformed that. By the way, since you mentioned that you are doing documentary film about Ethiopian art, do you know anything about the priceless arts that were collected from different Orthodox Churches under Mr. Gezahegn Kebede’s name and are ready to be shipped to Houston with out being verified by Ethiopian custom with order? This artifact is supposedly to be sold under different name through different gift shops in every state where Lucy might travels.
When it comes to Ethiopia, the Victorian writer turn their head the other way and write their story based on assumption, however as the center of gravity pull everything around into its core, the path of life goes in a circle through a phases and as time goes by, regardless of how we both cry out the truth will manifest itself.
Yes! I will add to your comment that Ethiopia is the only unique, rich and powerful country that I know on earth. Without going too deep, it’s indeed the “Basket full of Bead” which is feeding the world with her rich and diverse value and wisdom. Ethiopia is knows as a bridge to humanity and one can imagine and appreciate the roll of the Great Ethiopia around the three century, letter as Abyssinia, The roll of Ethiopia both on the era of Jesus and Mohamed is inscribed on both wholly bibles. I wonder if you can connect as why the British change the name of Oceanic Ethiopic to Pacific Ocean. Are you telling me Lucy is not in danger?????
Until someone proves me wrong, Lucy is Eve. Ethiopia is Alpha and Omega. If this thought makes you hmmmm??? Then it’s not only wrong but also a crime to let such original and historic artifact to travel miles. Especially now when there is some potentially hostile conditions are exist in everywhere. Knowing this, the Ethiopian government offers the original Lucy to travel miles. This shows and proves the Ethiopian government has no vested interest to Ethiopia and Ethiopians. Having a criminal intent doesn’t make anyone less criminal. I hold you and anyone who in their conscious mind advocate on behalf of the HMNS as criminal. For one or more reasons, the European including the America policy toward Africa especially to Ethiopia is wishful to break our sprit. We have seen that through the adjective they use in the media etc… But the Original Lucy doesn’t have to travel miles to justify that of your logic. I take it that is your reasoning for not to boycott the Lucy exhibition. According to your profession, no body! I mean no body! Can tell replica from the original until Carbon study is performed. If that is the case, I wonder why you advocating on behalf of HMNS and Ethiopian stooges?
The link you put has no any bearing on the question that the Ethiopians and the scientific communities are asking what the museum and the Ethiopian government needs to do. It's obvious there are people who sale their own soul. But, you have a professional obligation to stand clean and be an example to others. I know the government is spending a huge amount of money for Washington lobbyist for a verity of cynical reasons. paying blood money to the so-called professionals to write a twisted and misguided article is one of them. Maybe I can give you a genuine name and links to read, ask the opinion of Dr. Tim White, Stanford, click on these links: http://www.aigaforum.com/lucy-22-05.htm http://www.usatoday.com/tech/science/discoveries/2005-03-21-hobbit-usat_x.htm Maybe you need to talk to Dr.Giday (Los Alamos) Dr. Haile-Selassie (Cleveland Museum), Dr. Semaw... Unless you have some sort of other hidden agenda, second gain, or simply selfish interest, You wouldn’t be saying
“ In doing so, the Museum and Ethiopian Tourism wants to encourage people from all over Texas to get an opportunity to see the priceless Arts and history from the country starting September 2007. “
Ohhhh! About those two kids, until they grow be a person, It would be unfair to take them away from their mother breast. So I will let them bobble and cry against it...

Re: Boycott The Lucy Exhibit

Since you are very critical about the government in Ethiopia you are not going to appreciate anything that comes out of Ethiopia."LUCY" could be a good example. Just for the record, Ethiopia has experienced its highest economic growth in the last two decades, with the GDP growth rate, which averaged about 5 percent annually in the past six years, rising to 5.5 percent in 2006, and is expected to reach 6 percent in 2007. Going by Sub-Region, The African Economic Outlook 2006/2007 lists Ethiopia and few others in East Africa whose economic growth averaged 5.1 per cent in 2006, and is projected to accelerate to 5.8 and 6 per cent in 2007 and 2008, respectively. The facts are not on your side. You can continue your negative propaganda about the people and Government of the country. "BUT" Ethiopia remain the fastest growing countries in the sub-region. I am not a politician but I am disappointed with people like you whose comments are negative about everything that goes on in Ethiopia. I am convinced that you are from the old generation who screwed up everything in the first place. I would like to inform you that the new generation like myself are involved in investment in our country. When you start investing in your country, your opinion will also start being positive toward your country.

Onelove, By African standards, Ethiopia is a potentially wealthy country, with fertile soil and good rainfall over large regions. Farmers produce a variety of grains, including wheat, corn, and millet. Coffee also grows well on southern slopes. Herders can raise cattle, sheep, and goats in nearly all parts of the country. Additionally, Ethiopia possesses several valuable minerals, including gold and platinum. About four-fifths of the population were subsistence farmers who lived in poverty because they used most of their meager production to pay taxes, rents, debt payments, and bribes to the government officials. The GDP you're talking about is not real GDP. Who is doing the accounting?

Re: Boycott The Lucy Exhibit

Well Chuck, we live in relativity, that is all depend how you perceive and value what you exposed into. I said unless someone proves me, Lucy is Eve. If you have a little better explanation I am open to listen and learn from you. Other than that it would be he said and/or she said. I make that statement to emphasized how rich and powerful our Ethiopian history and foundations are. No! I could not even imagine nor think to give you any neither scientific nor logical explanation for that, but I do believe she is the closest to Eve. So, I hope you don’t take the statement out of context.
But that’s all up to you to relate to your experience and draw your conclusion about her. I am only interested why the Ethiopian government offering the Original Lucy remains for HMNS to take! Why and who give mandate to the museum to make a replica? Having been convinced on what Lucy could offer and unlock about the life of all mankind, it’s unethical to keep quite when I see and knows that such value is getting compromised.
The 16th century Leonardo da Vinci's famous oil painting masterpiece, Mona Lisa, hangs in the Musée du Louvre in Paris with maximum security. For example the change in pressure and altitude could completely change or damage Lucy, As the Museum hope to cash in the profit while moving around Lucy in most of the US states, what control nor guarantee do HMNS and the Ethiopian regime has on the climate and other natural changes. Without any doubts, such changes could and will compromise the safety of Lucy. Therefore, how could one think to support such deviously calculated act of vengeance on Ethiopia? When the king Tut mask leaves it was a major big deal in Egypt and Egyptian makes millions of dollar with that. I don’t think no single Ethiopian would object if the Lucy replica has been used.
There is an international resolution against any nonscientific export, isn’t that mean something, or is it atypical of TPLF and the regime to make law as they see it feet their purpose? It is all right to compromise on tactics, put compromising in principle is the worst of all crime against humanity. That is my core argument as why we must boycott the Lucy exhibition. As for Lucy being Eve, here is my take, Lucy is the oldest bi-podal human being lived and found in Ethiopia the most likely logic is her ancestor must have lived live in the area, therefore to assume Lucy is Eve, could open up a dialog for possibilities. Why not?

Lucy fossil approved for US tour By Natasha Metzler, AP Writer June 27, 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- WASHINGTON - A fossil tour doesn't have to mean an aging rock band's reunion concerts. The State Department gave final approval Wednesday for one of the world's most famous fossils — the 3.2 million-year-old Lucy skeleton unearthed in Ethiopia in 1974 — to tour the U.S. on exhibit for the first time. The Smithsonian has objected to the idea, however, because museum experts don't think the fragile remains should travel. So Lucy won't be stopping at the National Museum of Natural History, but in other U.S. museums instead.
Smithsonian scientists feel that certain artifacts, such as Lucy, are too valuable for the stresses of travel and should remain in their homes, according to National Natural History Museum spokesman Randall Kremer.
"This is one of the most important specimens relating to human origins in the world," Kremer said Wednesday. "We think it is too much of a risk to have it travel for the purposes of public viewing."
Even in Ethiopia the public has only seen the real Lucy remains twice. The Lucy exhibition at the Ethiopian Natural History Museum in the nation's capital, Addis Ababa, is a replica and the real remains are usually locked in a vault.
"We share with them the fact that artifacts like this need to be surrounded with the utmost care, but that should not preclude them from traveling," said Dirk Van Tuerenhout, curator of anthropology at the Houston Museum of Natural Science, which is arranging the tour. He added that representatives from his museum did deem some of the other artifacts offered by the Ethiopian government unable to travel.
"If you are able to showcase an original fossil, then you have a story, then you have a point of attraction that will bring in the most number of people, and then you can tell them that story," Van Tuerenhout said.
The State Department approved the exhibit for temporary importation into the U.S., saying that display of Lucy and the other artifacts is in the national interest because of their "cultural significance." The official announcement was published Wednesday in the Federal Register.
Lucy goes on display at the Houston Museum of Natural Science on Aug. 31, continuing through April 20, 2008. The other tour stops have not been finalized, according to museum spokeswoman Melodie Francis. But in announcing the plans to display the artifact last October, Ethiopian officials listed Washington, New York, Denver and Chicago as tour stops.
The fossilized remains were discovered in 1974 in the remote, desert-like Afar region in northeastern Ethiopia. Lucy is classified as an Australopithecus afarensis, which lived in Africa between about 4 million and 3 million years ago, and is the earliest known hominid.
Most scientists believe afarensis stood upright and walked on two feet, but they argue about whether it had ape-like agility in trees. The loss of that ability would suggest crossing a threshold toward a more human existence.

Meles the Great
|
The ethnic fundamentalist warlord, Meles Zenawi, is an Ethiopian by birth, but an enemy by deed. The independence and sovereignty of Ethiopia are the first causalities of Meles Zenawi`s onslaught. Meles Zenawi harbours deep seated contempt and disdain for Ethiopia and Ethiopians and he does not even hesitate to hide them. Ethiopians had unpleasantly experienced occasions on which he publicly scoffed at Ethiopia as a country of 100 years old and creation of one emperor and a certain group of Ethiopians.
Country loving Ethiopians should make the resistance and struggle against the internal enemies in the form of Meles Zenawi, their prime task and boycott his Millennium bluff. History will not pardon those who join the enemy of the country and toast with him especially after his cruel security forces have gunned down innocent citizens and the country is crying for justice. Ethiopia is just mourning and Meles Zenawi is not the right man to play host to the true Ethiopian Millennium Celebrations. He is defying calls and pleas to release all prisoners of conscience and holding elected leaders, human rights defenders, journalists and others on concocted charges. It is increasingly becoming obvious (even to those who used to doubt) that Meles Zenawi has been crowned in Ethiopia to serve as an instrument of of proxy colonialism. The saddening fall of Ethiopia under the grip of proxy colonialism should also be the concern for the rest of Africa. Meles Zenawi has brought disgrace and outrage not only to Ethiopia, but also to Africa, a continent that just emerged from the shackles of colonialism a few decades ago. Ethiopia under Meles Zenawi has become the hub of proxy colonialism and the darling of the west is even threatening regional peace and stability under the guise of fighting international terrorism. The flirtations and overtures of Meles Zenawi to celebrate the upcoming Ethiopian Millennium are tactical in nature and meant to hoodwink the Ethiopian public. Instead of seeking reconciliation and forgiveness, the merciless killer seeks to erase all the records of his vicious crimes from our memories.
Any gesture that is short of delivering justice to Ethiopians can not heal our wounds. Therefore, it is of critical importance to see through the evil motives of the enemy (Meles Zenawi) who fakes himself to mingle with us when the going gets tough for him and stabs us on the back when he feels secure. It is not by mere coincidence that he has launched his flock of gourmand cadres to organize and execute this swindling project.
Ethiopians living abroad should not be lured into his trap under any excuse or reason and disappoint and outrage our people. Meles Zenawi and his herd of cadres are insulting the intelligence of the Ethiopian immigrant community by spreading around their stinking propaganda about booming economy, business and investment opportunities. They are attempting to corrupt and alienate us from our people in their usual crude way. It is natural for a human being to go after fortunes but it should not happen at the expense of or to the detriment of one`s country. The rights to invest and own assets in our country should not be considered as the gifts of Meles Zenawi or any other power holder. They are the inalienable rights of all Ethiopians and should be viewed as such.
We owe a lot to our people and country and boycotting the celebrations of the blood thirsty agent of proxy colonialism is the least we can do to express our solidarity with and support for the ongoing struggle. Let us all hope and work to receive the new Millennium without Meles Zenawi, repression and tyranny in Ethiopia. Celebrating with Meles Zenawi could be regarded as insensitivity to his victims and an offence to Ethiopians who are resisting tyranny and paying high prices. Any step that can benefit Meles Zenawi and contribute to prolong the plight of Ethiopians, may not be forgivable.

ETHIOPIAN MILLENNIUM
|
What have we Ethiopian achieved that we are rushing to celebrate the ‘Ethiopian new millennium’-2000? Whose millennium is it any way? These are questions that inquisitive minds are likely to ask when observing the rushes and the extraordinary government preparation to celebrate the new millennium in September 2007 Gregorian calendar or known to ‘Ethiopian’ as September 2000, ‘the new millennium’. That comes almost eight years later than the millennium that was celebrated on most of the world’s continents. It is the odd one out I guess. This is perhaps the only millennium of its kind in Africa to be celebrated at this time.
Let us come to the meat of the argument to attempt to answer the questions. The facts scream that Ethiopia’s 76,511,887 population according to CIA (2007) are leaving in abject poverty, major epidemic diseases such HIV/AID are spreading at alarming rates with diverse consequences, the country is involved in major wars and conflicts both internally and externally. Economy-wise there is no story worth telling; those notorious adjectives and pictures which describe the economy are still there - ‘poverty-stricken’ for instance. There is nothing false about the description because it is fact that more than 80 % of its population are unemployed. But sometimes statistics is generous; it takes from the ruling party companies and some people who can afford and says that the per capita GDP is $ 100 ‘giving’ the money to the 80 % unemployed people who do not even have that $ 100. The cause for all major cause for all these appears to be the unending wars and conflicts within and neighbouring countries because of lack of freedom and democracy to mobilise it people. Government’s war spending has even devastated the non- exiting economy for most of its people, BBC. Over 10 big rebel movements are active including the Oromo liberation front and the Ogaden Liberation Front are struggling for freedom because the government has proved that peaceful dialogues is not possible as long as it there.
To me as person who has observed and experienced the pains of this country, most people have more reason to mourn, to cry, and to curse the millennium, 2000, than celebrate it. The government has started the campaign for the celebration at the beginning of this year. A so called ‘millennium celebration secretariat’ (the whole millennium plan is found in the ruling party’s press) has offices in every region and cities in the country to coordinate the effort. EPRDF’s surrogates parties are rushing to spend ‘donors’ money and to achieve publicity internationally. That is because the government wants the world to forget the massacres on all the three de facto elections that took place from 1992-2005 where tanks and helicopters were deployed on protesting civilians to silence them from speaking against injustices of immeasurable magnitude.
Will thousands of families who lost someone to conflicts, wars, hunger even put smile, to the maximum, let alone celebrate the so called ‘Ethiopian millennium-2000’? That is impossible when everyone is aware that the government is trying to project a positive image about itself regardless of the screaming facts about what they have made that country to be. There seem to be many more reasons to mourn than celebrate. My attempt is not to finish all of them but to show that the Ethiopian government is using the millennium propaganda to campaign for acceptance amongst world leaders. The millennium is planned with a ‘great run’ event on which they want to force 30, 000 people out to run to attract the attention said. Page 1

Deconstructed, the Ethiopian millennium will be, as the preparations show, celebration of a minority ruling class and affiliates who have amassed the wealth of the poor unjustly. On the millennium date, stories will be told that ‘Ethiopia has never been colonised’. This is completely controversial areas where all people of the country have not yet formed the country by their consent that is agreed to be ‘Ethiopia’. The cultural and linguistic expression of the ruling group has been imposed on rest of the country. Excuse me if you think this is outrageous and not true. Of course I’m a lot patriotic than you think I may not be. May be I love my country better than you do. I am only describing that there is not yet a national identity or a just national state formed since the nations 100 years history by the consent of its people. Ethiopian is an empire which was born and we opened our eyes to see it clamp down on us. Yet, we are ‘Ethiopians’. The year does not matter, it can be 3000 thousand as some historians would flippantly love to write. But where are we in those hundred or 3000 thousand years pretending that history is true. It is painful to and violent to physically fight, but I am only talking, just conversation so that you can question what there really is to celebrate. As rational beings thinking is what precedes doing. Let us think and do something…
Without achieving any freedom and democracy, and as we daily see the all-rounded meltdown of the Empire (oh sorry, I forgot it is now called the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia), it is hard to celebrate but mourn, but cry, but sob, but think that our own land is not ours. What millennium with a pack of 77 million dying people. Ok, I have forgotten the ruling tyranny is not amongst the dying. It leverages the millennium celebration to cover up the stinks in its backyards to stay in power for some more years. This government off people to itself, by itself, and against people is never tired of duping donors to convince them to vote for the cancellation of its debts. The debts were used on military spending not on the bread that people desperately need as the facts suggest. And it will use the new millennium whistles for the same attraction.

Ethiopia bullies its citizens, United States ignoring Turkish Weekly June 19, 2007
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- CAIRO - Ethiopia, a strategic US partner in the so-called war on terror, is brutalizing its own people and opposition but its notorious human rights record is largely overlooked by the Bush administration. "What the Ethiopian security forces are doing may amount to crimes against humanity," Georgette Gagnon, deputy director for the Africa division of Human Rights Watch, told The New York Times reported on Monday, June 18.
The activist branded Ethiopia as one of the most repressive countries in Africa, a characterization that many rights organizations and Western officials agree with.
A clear example of army brutality is evident in Ogaden, a desert region on the borders with neighboring Somalia where the mostly pastoral nomad people have been chafing against Ethiopian rule since 1897.
Many rights groups have documented thousands of cases of torture, gang-raping, burning down huts and killing civilians of the ethnic Somali population in Ogaden.
"They hit us in the face with the hardest part of their guns," Moualin, whose face still carries the scars of the last Ethiopian raid on his Sasabene village in January, told the Times.
Anab, a 40-year-old Ogadeni camel herder, described how the Ethiopian troops routinely abuse young women in her village.
"Me, I am old," she said, "but they raped me, too."
Even in other parts of the country ravaged by poverty and famine, the government's grip does not get any looser, with a massive clampdown on democracy and opposition groups.
"There are no real steps toward democracy," said Merera Gudina, vice president of the United Ethiopian Democratic Forces, a leading opposition party.
"No real steps toward opening up space, no real steps toward ending repression."
During the 2005 elections, the opposition faced a crackdown after winning a record number of seats in parliament.
Government troops opened fire on demonstrators, rounded up opposition supporters and even attempted to kill top opposition leaders.
Overlooked
Civil liberty organizations and Western officials have repeatedly criticized Washington for overlooking the obvious in Ethiopia.
This has also raised the irk of many inside the Congress.
"This is a country that is abusing its own people and has no respect for democracy," Donald M. Payne, chairman of the House of Representative Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Africa and global health, told the Times.
"We’ve not only looked the other way but we’ve pushed them to intrude in other sovereign nations," he added, referring to the Ethiopian invasion of neighboring Somalia last December.
The Ethiopian military, along with the Somali interim government forces, routed the ruling Supreme Islamic Courts of Somalia (SICS) in a two-week war, pushing the war-torn country into abyss.
The Bush administration has defended and supported the offensive as part of global war on "international terrorism."
It has offered Ethiopia significant sharing of intelligence on the SICS fighters positions and information from American spy satellites.
Ethiopia has long been a strong ally of Washington in the strategic Horn of Africa.
For years the US has been pouring weapons and military advisers into Ethiopia, and the American military has trained Ethiopian troops at bases in the eastern region.
The regime of Meles Zenawi has also received millions of dollars in US military aid since 2002.
Payne and other key Democrats in Congress are currently moving against the American policy toward Ethiopia.
They are questioning the Bush administration's bid to double aid to Ethiopia from the current $284 million to $481 million next year.
